Northrop Grumman’s YFQ-48A Talon Blue has completed its first fully autonomous flight, the company announced on October 3, 2026. The aircraft performed taxi, takeoff, in-flight maneuvers and landing without a pilot at Mojave, California. Developed through internal company investment, Talon Blue is designed to deliver mission-capable autonomous airpower at lower cost and with faster production timelines.

The company said modular design and advanced manufacturing techniques have reduced the aircraft’s part count and overall weight, helping lower costs and support production at scale as demand for autonomous systems grows. Talon Blue features a high air intake, a wide wheelbase and an integrated weapons bay, which Northrop Grumman says support a broad range of mission needs for U.S. and allied partners. The first flight draws on the company’s seven decades of autonomy experience and more than 500,000 autonomous flight hours.

Talon Blue is part of Project Talon, Northrop Grumman’s internally funded portfolio aimed at accelerating mission-ready autonomous capabilities. The portfolio also includes Talon IQ, an autonomy testbed built on the Scaled Composites Model 437 aircraft and powered by the company’s Prism Mission Autonomy software. Together, the two platforms are intended to let Northrop Grumman and its partners rapidly develop, test and field autonomous capabilities tailored to emerging threats and operational requirements. Craig Woolston, vice president and general manager of research and advanced design, said lessons from each flight will strengthen the company’s broader autonomy work.
