The Irish Department of Defence has signed a strategic contract, via the French DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement), with global defense leader Thales to acquire advanced air surveillance systems. Under the agreement, Ireland will procure four Ground Master 400 Alpha (GM400α) long-range radars and one Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission All-in-one (GM200 MM/A) radar to strengthen its national airspace sovereignty. Backed by Thales’ strong industrial ramp-up, the first deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.
With over 300 radars sold across more than 40 countries, the Thales Ground Master family continues to demonstrate strong international traction. This procurement marks a milestone for the Irish Defence Forces, as it will provide the nation with its first fully integrated and comprehensive Recognised Air Picture (RAP). This enhanced situational awareness will significantly bolster Ireland’s national security, defense capabilities, and airspace sovereignty in a complex security landscape.
The acquired systems bring cutting-edge sensor technology and exceptional operational flexibility to the field. The GM400α features a rapid 6-second update rate, advanced processing power, and high survivability through its 20-foot ISO container design with an integrated lifting system. Meanwhile, the GM200 MM/A offers an “all-in-one” shelter solution containing the radar, mast, and power generator, allowing for rapid truck transport and full operational deployment within just 15 minutes.
